What carb do you recommend?

We are asked every week the question: “Which carburettor do you recommend for my engine….” Usually followed by a long list of engine modification and specifications.

The answer is always: “The carb that gives you the drive you want”.

Different carburettor setups will produce a different drive and govern how the engine responds REGARDLESS of what mods are done. Some examples: A standard Factory carburettor can be recalibrated to run a full race engine (common where the racing class rules only permit the original carb), correctly tuned the carb will not damage or harm the engine in any way, just simply caps the horsepower and acceleration rate.

In the same sense, we often fit Triple Racing Weber carburettors to completely standard factory 6cly engines, just because the owner simply likes the way they feel and sound. Again, correctly tuned, they will not run rich or be detrimental to the engine. Both carbs – standard factory, and triple Webers – will offer a completely different drive.

As we have been fitting and tuning all these carb sets for over 30yrs, we can help to advise the technical differences and typical drives that each gives. The choice however will still be your personal tastes and wants.

There are other considerations to keep in mind:
Price / costs – needs to be affordable
Brands – Status and fashion are considered with Classic or collectable vintage.
Running costs – You need to service and maintain your set up. Some will be easier/cheaper than others (EG: twin carbs are literally twice the service of a single carb)
Tuning – Some types of carbs can not be easily tuned by your regular mechanic (Particulaly recalibrating factory carbs) and may prefer easier aftermarket carbs.

We can usually narrow this down to one or two choices if known how you use your car, and how you like to drive.
